 Audi TT Short Shifter Linkage

This part came to my attention when a controversy erupted regarding Autotech's new Short Shifter for the MkIV Golf/GTI/Jettas. It turns out that Autotech was selling a stock, OEM Audi part with their logo, and a nice powdercoated finish for $49. The part is the stock shifter linkage on the 180hp, FWD Audi TT. Dealers usually have it for about $33-35, albeit without the nice finish.

When installed in the MkIV VW, it results in a 20% reduction in front to back throws. (About 1.5" reduction from 5.5" to 4" total throw according to my unscientific measurements)

The part number for any one who is interested is: 8N0-711-051 - My local Audi dealer had it ordered for me in about a week, for $35. (there has been talk that the part is on national backorder in Canada, but judging from my experience, it hasn't affected the US)

Below is a how-to.. See my intake mod to see how to remove your airbox/intake to access the shifter linkage below.

You'll need:

  • 13mm socket
  • 13mm open-ended wrench will help to remove the sockets off the ball joints as it will clear the ball
  • a little bearing grease

(1) unbolt this 13mm nut
(2) using an open ended 13mm wrench, pry socket off ball on part. (you'll see what I mean if you look at the new Audi TT part
(3) same here.. pry off socket from ball.

Then just pull straight up on the part... you may need to jiggle it a bit to get it to slide off the shaft (where the 13mm nut was) Remember more or less how the part lined up before you pull it out. I eyeballed it and it came out fine.

Here is a look without the numbers in the way.

the old stock Golf/Jetta part on the left, and the new Audi TT part on the right.

Note the only difference is that little ball on the top right is simply relocated a few millimeters.

This is how it looks all disassembled. I actually added a bit of bearing grease to where the plastic piece slides on the new part (right above the shaft for the linkage) before I put it back together.

A before and after (animated GIF) of how far forward the shifter was. It's not perfect, since I had to resize to compare the two shots... but you get the picture.

A before and after of how far back the shifter was. Again, not perfect.
